Amazon France blasted discriminatory and harmful measure of purchasing power after the adoption by Parliament of a bill prohibiting e-retailers to combine free shipping of books and allowed 5% discount on the price of books.
"Any move to increase the price of the book first penalize the purchasing power of French and would discriminate for the consumer internet, responded the giant of online business" we react in the French subsidiary .
The Amazon fears were well-founded MPs questioned its economic model for free shipping book ordered online. The official challenge: supporting traditional booksellers, suffering from the competition of the largest online bookstore in France.
The Cultural Affairs Committee of the National Assembly voted in first reading the draft law to regulate the conditions of distance selling books.
This enactment amends a section of the law Lang on the price of the book. The text adopted to prevent the accumulation of free shipping for shipping books ordered via the Internet with the 5% discount. This bill came from several UMP (opposition) but was adopted by the Assembly.
Specifically, if the book is ordered on the Internet, the online shop may not to apply the discount (it will be more expensive in the bookstore), except deduction of shipping.
"If the bills pass, it will have a minor impact on Amazon, but, however, that penalize consumers and threaten cultural diversity in France, because Amazon offers the widest selection of new or used in France" warned the head of the French industry giant's e-commerce, earlier this week.
